It has been a long time since the release of my first collection of found collage photos Accidental Archaeology #1 in 2009, but I am finally able to announce that the next book in the series is now available from Lulu.com.
This collection of found collage urban photography spans a decade and features photos taken in Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, as well as some images from London and Paris.
Excerpt from the Introduction:
I guess it started in 2006 when I was living in Melbourne. I’d bought my first ever digital camera, which would probably now be considered a clunky and awkward Olympus, and I had started spending quite a bit of time walking through the streets taking photos of any layered, ripped, damaged or otherwise decayed bill posters.
By this point in time I had already been making collages for over a decade and capturing and recording these urban surfaces just seemed like a natural progression. I found the textures and compositions created by the random layering of these posters one on top of the other, then torn, peeled and weathered away, at times so very beautiful. The one image or word appearing beside another unexpectedly triggered all the same connections as a crafted collage would, yet these were not made by human hands. Not in any deliberate way anyhow.
But more importantly than that, they were so transitory. They were constantly changing and evolving. Each wad of posters could be torn down or covered over at any second. Some were victims of their own weight, over an inch thick and metres long, gravity was inevitably going to have its say. I could walk by a wall in the morning, and then find something completely different on the way back past in the afternoon, and something else again the following morning. So much magic happened overnight.
At first the idea was that I would use these photos as inspiration for my collage work, but they very quickly took on an importance of their own.
